Please describe your problem/bug/idea below:

Specify print orientation

In many products, quality and accuracy can be improved by being able to set in which orientation or direction a model should be printed. I'm proposing that we would optionally be able to specify what the 'z' axis of a print should be; if necessary, I'd be willing to pay a premium for this in de models where this option is chosen.

Hey folks,

thanks again for bringing this up. We will be adding this to our service, but not on the short term (2-3 months) as we’re having to focus on other issues right now. I’m closing this issue for now so I can return you your votes.

Cheers,

Bart

Very important feature!! As long as this function is not possible, I have to hold back the most of my new prints. Any Idea if and when you will be able to make possible this feature?

    Yes please !
This feature is necessary if you want to do detailed work with the FUD material.

I am fully behind this, and I need this or it's not viable to use shapeways. the support structure is not smooth where it interfaces, and while I can design around it, only on the Z axis. XY makes for rough walls. With FUD the details can easily be small enough that any manual post processing will damage detail before smoothIng the surface sufficiently. Thank you if you are already working on it!

A very good idea. But I don't think that it is necessary to pay a premium price for it.

Since the start of 2012 I've received 17 out of 20 with poor surface, which could have been eliminated by proper orientation directions bythe modeler. So, I totally agree that the modeler should be able to direct the orientation.

I agree with this whole heartedly.. many issues have been found with many products and I feel this is something that needs serious looking into.. thanks for making this public..

Similarly, for glazed ceramic I'd really like to specify which surface the base is (since it isn't glazed).

With all the bad experience i have, i think about suspending ordering from shapeways as long as i'm not allowed to specify the print orientation.
Of course, this feature will have it's price, but i'm more than willing to pay!
